Cucina (Coo-chee-na) – Kitchen

…today was super busy….not really with anything that amazing just really with school and classes and such….i got up this morning and when to 2 hours of Italian and then had about a half hour break and then had 3 hours of Italian culture…phew…then it was home for about two hours (of which I really should have been productive, but figured that snacking and watching tv shows on my computer was a MUCH better use of my time J )….at about 4pm myself and a couple others headed off to find the home of our cuisine professor!!
….ok back story on the story of today….first of all Italian Cuisine is an awesome 1 credit course offered through USAC that only meets 5 times the whole semester (the first of which was today) at our teacher, Elizabetta’s apartment, where we meet, talk, cook, and eat…..so she lives over on Re Umberto and Corso Dante which is about a 7 minute metro ride, and then about a 10 minute bus ride…..which is nothing…..except transportation was on strike today…..literally strikes happen here about once a week….you are made aware of it a couple days before, and even then they always still run from 6-9 and 12-15….and even then sometimes they don’t last all day, or like today they were running again at 16:15 but not at 20…..literally I don’t know that they know what strike means, or how to do it properly….so anyways we were leaving early since we thought that we were going to have to walk, but thankfully it was open…..so we took the metro to Dante….then waited around for a bus that never came so we started walking, and after a couple wrong turns….we showed up, looking like little wet dogs, for our first day of heaven class…
…first of all it is taught by Elizabetta, at her apartment with her daughter helping and washing dishes….and she is one of the most adorable people ever….so we started class just talking about Italian and how it came to be, and then moved in to the cooking…oh my goodness gracious it was soooo much fun…..we actually made a full Italian meal, so antipasti (appetizer), primi piatti (first plate, pasta), secondi piatti (second plate, usually meat with a salad or some other side) and then dolce (dessert)……
so tonight we made a blood orange salad with onions, olive oil, salt, and parsley…soo goodJ….

then our first plate, we made gnocchi (a type of pasta made with potatoes and flour…my fav) in two ways, one was with a butter, oil and Fontina cheese (this cheese ONLY comes from Valle d’ Aosta, which is about two hours away and is the Italian side of the Matterhorn) and then also with a basic tomato sauce that we made from scratch…
...then the secondi was Milanese Chicken (breaded chicken) and cooked fennel…this was one of those things that are soo good separately, but when you eat them in the same bite, its like the best party your mouth has ever been to!!!..

..and finally dessert was Buget, a chocolate cake that is more the consistency of pudding….seriously so good…
…so we got to learn how to make all of these things and then sat down to dinner all together to eat it all….it was soooo cool and soooo much fun!!! I wish that we had it every single day….it was absolutely amazing….too bad I don’t get to go again for two weeks L….such a cool thing though that I will be able to make myself gnocchi when I go back to boise….

…that was the highlight of today for sure…after class we walked back home, since the metro decided it didn’t want to be open anymore….not bad though, probably a 15 or 20 minute walk back to Lingotto…..then it was rough housing and playing around with Giacomo til I was absolutely exhausted and he went to bed J….then some homework, blog and off to bed!....ciao tutti, buona notte!!
