(this
is actually yesterday I just didn’t get to posting it, most of these from now
on will probably be posted the day after…)
sheesh I have only been here for two days and I feel as
though I have been here forever…it was move in day today and let me tell you it
was like Christmas for all of us (ok maybe not the guys) but it was seriously
wicked fun…but more on that after… today started with breakfast at the hotel and
then a meeting about housing dos, donts, and the major cultural living
differences…so just for an example, we all have gas stoves not electrics, and
there aren’t any dryers here so everything is hang dried and finally there is a
national law that quiet hours in Italy are from 11pm – 8am and all people must
observe them (nuts right)…after our meeting we were released for some free time
before they got to the school neighborhood (they moved in Downtown apartments
first, then those in midtown, then school and specifically myself, last)…today
was the day I met my host family for the first time…
…so
I met Eliana at the front gate and rode up the cutest elevator to the second
floor and walked into the most magnificent, purely european, modern apartment
and I was in love… two balconies! One off the front living room and another off
my room, the kitchen, and the parents room. This place is freaking fantastic! Just
wait until I post some pictures tomorrow!!
So
my host mom, Eliana speaks actually very good English but wants to practice
because her husband, Simone maybe getting transferred to Chicago area…but she
is just delightful and after some talking, we took her Fiat and when to pick up
her son, Giacomo was so shy at first but after I opened all the candy I brought
him back from the states, we were the BEST friends! hmm interesting..but we
spent the next few hours playing and tickling and it was rather perfect J
Eliana
kept introducing me to her friends, a fellow mom at school then the doorkeeper
at the apartment building….and also she had a friend come over (with the best
gelato in the city!) named Claudia who used to work for Coke in the states and
so she wanted to be able to speak English with me which was really fun too….we
played a game that teaches English (they were using it to test my Italian) that
Eliana uses, it has a board that you put different papers on with italian and english
words and use two little pens to connect the too and it tells you if you are
right or not, it was so cool!!
Finally
around 9 (I say that because Italians don’t eat dinner until at least 8 or 9 at
night) Eliana started making dinner….she made us pizza which is surprising
because most people here only go out for it not make it at home J
but she made it just the way youd expect…except with sauce that is basically
just pulverized tomatoes and nothing else, and fantastic mozzarella and cooked….and
then took it out and put HOTDOGS ON IT!!!
It was so wild but surprisingly good J She couldn’t really
explain to me where it came from for her it just did….just another perk of
living with Italians J
After
dinner, her husband Simone came home and he was just delightful…we were
watching The Ribelle (Brave the Disney movie just in Italian) and it was just a
great evening…he works as a director at IVECO and CH (that’s what the names
sound like, I could be wrong haha) but they may be transferring him to Chicago
in December as the HQ used to be here in Turin and now they are there J
(that’s why they wanted me) apparently they are huge companies, CH is the 2nd
largest provider of combines and tractors in the US behind John Deer!...
But
the best part of the evening was being able to skype my mom! And she got to
meet my family, even little Giacomo! It was so cool that she got to see me and
my family here, and that they will all get to meet in just a week and my host
mom can make pizza with my mom making cookies, that will be great!
Ok
I really hope that I didn’t forget anything….i had to finish this the next day
because I fell asleep writing it last night! Oops…but overall I am in love with
living here, Giacomo is the most adorable bambino and probably my new best
friend even though we cant communicate yet J….day 2 was a wild success…..
(sorry my pictures wouldnt load today :( the internet wasnt fast enough...tomorrow hopefully tho!)
